HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (Aug. 28, 2010) – Historically speaking,  Massachusetts is known as the landing place of the Pilgrims in 1620 at Plymouth, as well as being the home of Moto-X 338 in Southwick. The track is owned by American Legion Post 338, hence the official name of Moto-X 338, commonly referred to simply as Southwick. The first race at the track was held in 1972 and its first professional race was in 1976. Southwick is the only sand track on the circuit, making the conditions especially challenging for both the riders and the engines which have to run much harder than usual to pull through the soft surface.

Josh Grant fell victim to the Southwick sand in the first practice session crashing and injuring his left shoulder. An initial examination by the on-site Asterisk Mobile Medical Unit personnel did not show anything obviously wrong but Grant was in pain and elected not to ride. He will undergo a thorough examination this week to determine the extent of the injury.

In the first moto Justin Brayton started mid-pack, a tough way to begin a moto at Southwick as the fine sand roost coming from the rear wheels of the riders ahead makes visibility difficult. Brayton ducked the roost and soldiered through the enormous ruts ending the race in 16th position.

In the second moto Brayton again rounded the first turn mid-pack, and was 17th at the conclusion of lap one. Over the following 30 minutes he doggedly worked his way around the rutted Southwick course and was able to cross the checkers in 10th position.

Brayton’s 16 - 10 moto scores gave him 11th overall for the day. After not earning points in either moto due to the aforementioned shoulder injury Josh Grant dropped to sixth in series points.

The original broadcast from Southwick was same day coverage (SDC) at 9:00 p.m. on SPEED. Round 11 of the 12-race series will be Sept. 4 at Steel City Raceway in Delmont, Pa. SPEED will broadcast the racing from Steel City at 9:00 p.m. (EST) Sept. 4 (SDC).
